You must register your loved one’s passing with the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the district where the death occurred.
Here you will find information which you may find useful as a reminder of what needs to be done after someone has died.
The death of a loved one is always a deeply difficult time. Alongside the sadness and practical arrangements, there is also the important legal step of registering the death.
In England and Wales, a death must be registered within five days at the local register office where the death occurred, once the medical examiner has confirmed the cause of death. The registration appointment usually takes around 30 minutes.
The doctor or medical examiner will send the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death directly to the register office. Once this has been received, you can book an appointment online or by phone with the local Registration Service to complete the registration.
If you’re unsure which register office to contact, our team can guide you through the process and help you make the appointment. We’re also more than happy to arrange the registration appointment on your behalf, finding a day and time that suits you as much as possible.
You can make an appointment with North Northants Registrars via:
https://northnorthamptonshire.zipporah.co.uk/Registrars/
For West Northants Registrars the appointment can be made via:
https://westnorthamptonshire.zipporah.co.uk/Registrars/
After your appointment to register the death you will be able to complete the Notification or Registration of Death (BD8) form that you will be given by the Registrar of Deaths. This will inform every department using the National Insurance number of the death, but it is advisable to telephone appropriate pensions, benefits and tax offices as soon as possible to avoid inadvertent over-payment of pensions/benefits.
Please remember that this information is just a guide, and not all of the details will apply in every case.
Please use the contact one of our offices if you need any further information or help registering a death and we will be happy to help.
We used used Averil Phillips for my dads funeral last month. Jacky was great and arranged a personal route for my dads final journey which was faultless. Staff are all compassionate and respectful. I would both
Recommend and use their services again if circumstances required.

We would have no hesitation in highly recommending Averil Phillips. We received first class service. We were kept well informed in a warm, friendly manner and felt very much looked after. Losing our lovely, lovely dad was heartbreaking but Tim was nothing but kind and compassionate and with us every step.
